Summary:
Mandukya Upanishad, Verse 7 (Part 2): Ātman is not the seen but the awareness (also called turiya) because of which seeing is possible. It cannot be dealt with empirically – you cannot reach, possess, or purify it, since you are the awareness in whose presence all dealings appear. It is already self-evident (praptasya-prapti), never absent, so it cannot be grasped as something new at some location or time. It has no marks, color, or form – it must be free of all attributes to manifest as any attribute. It cannot be known through objectification (vrtti-vyapti); Vedanta removes the notion of ātman as object without replacing it with another object-thought. Limited words indicate limitlessness through bhāga-tyāga-lakṣaṇā – retaining the intended meaning while discarding the limited. “Sat” points to pure is-ness common to all things, not one existing object; “cit” points to the presence revealing all states of mind, not any particular state. One unbroken “I” shines through all three states.
