Panchadashi CH1 & Dakshinamurti Stotra – India Retreat January 8-18, 2027
This welcoming retreat invites you to explore life's deepest questions in a supportive environment. Together, we'll use guided contemplations, relatable examples, diagrams, and lively discussions to peel away layers of misunderstanding regarding your existence, the basic understanding of self. No previous experience required – just bring your curiosity and openness.
You'll be guided through two texts:
TEXT 1: Panchadashi, CH1 (65 Verses)

Panchadashi, Chapter 1 is called Tattva Viveka, or “Clarity About What Is Real.” We'll start with one simple question: what are you, exactly, beneath the body, the breath, the mind, and even the feeling of joy?
Together, we'll walk through the five layers of experience, from the physical body to the subtlest layer of bliss. One by one, we'll see why you are none of them. We'll also talk about how this confusion began. We'll trace how the cosmos appears, how the three bodies form, and how waking, dream, and deep sleep fit in. That way, you'll understand not only what went wrong, but why.
Then we'll come to the great statement Tat Tvam Asi, “You are That.” You've probably heard it before. Here, it stops being a nice idea and becomes something you can check for yourself, right now.
Along the way, you'll make friends and share your questions with the group. Talking things through helps the teaching sink in. By the end, you'll go home with a new way of seeing yourself. It covers 65 verses, and we'll take them at an unhurried pace.
Topics covered:
- The One “You” Behind Every Experience: Waking, dreaming, and deep sleep keep changing, yet something in you never does. We'll find it, and see why what you chase in love and happiness is really your own fullness.
- How “Me, the Limited One” Gets Started: How does limitless awareness seem to become a small, seeking person? We'll trace the story, using dream as a guide, and see why it's real in daily life but has no ultimate hold on you.
- One Subject, Many Objects: You are an object to Me, and I am an object to You. So who is the one subject? We'll look at why “witness consciousness” can mislead, and why the drk-drsya split has to resolve into one awareness.
- The Five Layers of “I”: From “I am tall” to “I am the one who needs to be happy,” we'll learn to spot where we're standing. Then we'll sort what comes and goes from what never leaves, without pushing the body or mind away.
- Where the World Comes From: How does a cause that never changes give rise to a universe full of change? We'll follow the story from samvid to prakrti to Ishvara, and from causal to subtle to gross. We'll see why you can never find the “first” seed or the “first” father, and what that tells you about how real the world is.
- Tat Tvam Asi, Piece by Piece: “You are That” is easy to say and hard to trust. We'll look at how the teaching removes what doesn't belong, and how a world full of qualities can come from what has none.
- Making It Yours, and Avoiding the Traps: Hearing, thinking, and settling into the teaching, plus the samadhi trap and the “how do I keep it?” trap. We'll also look at what life is like for the wise person, who still has a body and a history but no longer mistakes them for who they are.
- When Knowledge Dawns, What Happens to Karma? Does the jiva vanish? Where do sancita and prarabdha go? We'll look at why the causal body is more like a snake that was never in the rope than something that gets destroyed. We'll also see how a wise person can still live a full life.
TEXT 2: Dakshinamurti Stotra (10 Verses)
Dakshinamurti Stotram (Hymn to the Silent Teacher) is one of the most extraordinary teaching scenes ever described – a young Shiva sitting under a banyan tree while ancient sages sit at his feet, and the teaching happens entirely in silence.
Shankaracharya wrote this hymn as a tribute to the power of the Guru – the grace that dissolves confusion not through more information, but through direct recognition.
As the evening companion to our daytime study of Panchadasi, this text offers a chance to feel what you've been learning all day.
