1. The Shortest Path to the Self | Mandukya Upanishad & Gaudapada Karika – Introduction

Summary:

Mandukya means “froglike,” suggesting long periods of quiet withdrawal followed by sharing wisdom. Upanishad means certain knowledge that removes wrong ideas about the Self. Because everyday language can wrongly turn the Self into an object, a guru is needed. Teacher and student pray for nourishment and protection from personal, environmental, and unknown obstacles.

INTRODUCTION

Meaning of Mandukya

Mandukya-upanisad means ‘froggish' scripture. Frog is an animal that remains for about nine to ten months in a year hibernating either in the mud at the bottom of tanks and water pool or among accumulated dirt and rubbish. They thus remain the major part of the year in seclusion and quietude, seemingly meditating upon themselves, renouncing all activities. They come out in the rainy season to croak their message.

Meaning of Upanishad

The word Upaniṣad itself encodes the entire journey – upa (the ātmā, whatever is closest to you), ni (doubtless knowledge [niścaya jñānam]), ṣad (destroyer) – meaning: Upaniṣad is doubtless knowledge that removes erroneous notions about Atma.

They are considered [śruti] – “heard wisdom” – not invented by the sages [ṛṣis] but received by them in meditation, owing to their extraordinarily pure [sāttvika] minds. The Upanishads originates from the Creator himself; its mantras are already present in creation, like signals that only a specially tuned receiver can pick up.

Upanishads Challange

The Upaniṣads face a formidable challenge: all available language was built to describe the objective world [anātmā], which has five features – objectifiability [dṛśyatvam], materiality [bhautikatvam], attributes [saguṇatvam], changeability [savikāratvam], and transience [āgamāpāyitvam]. The self doesn't have any of the five features listed.

The danger in studying the Upanisads alone is objectification of the Self – you begin treating Self as a mysterious thing to be experienced later, rather than recognizing that the one sitting for that realization is already that Self.

A guru's entire function is to break this objectification orientation and remind you the five principles:

  1. You are of the nature of eternal and all-pervading consciousness.
  2. You are the only source of permanent peace, security, and happiness.
  3. By your mere presence, you give life to the material body and through it experience the material universe.
  4. You are never affected by any event in the material world or in the body-mind complex.
  5. By forgetting your real nature, you convert life into a burden; by remembering your real nature, you convert life into a blessing.

ABOUT THE “SAHA NA AVATU PRAYER”

During the hour of teaching, the teacher is not your friend. They are your teacher. That distinction matters. A friend accommodates you. A teacher cannot accommodate two contradictory views just to keep the peace.

EG: If time-space is either relative or fixed, the teacher's job is to point toward what is in keeping with the facts, not to make you comfortable.

And yet, just because the teacher shows up and the student shows up doesn't mean learning will automatically happen. There has to be deliberate, active participation on both sides.

The prayer acknowledges this by saying: “Please protect us, so that learning can actually take place – because so many things can go wrong.”

And the nourishment (saha nau bhunak tu) we pray for is for both intellectual and emotional.

The prayer specifically addresses three categories of obstacles that can derail this:

  1. Adhi-atmika: Personal stuff, such as impatience, projection — and you know, or may not know you're doing it.
  2. Adhi-bhautika:  Environmental obstacles. Even if you are ready and the teacher is ready, things can still go wrong – a difficult classroom dynamic, other students, or even just getting to the retreat in the first place. The environment doesn't automatically cooperate.
  3. Adhi-daivika: Unknown factors – the things beyond anyone's control. You cannot will yourself to a higher IQ. You cannot manufacture chemistry between yourself and teacher. You might hear something too early, then discard it in future. You cannot force understanding to land on a particular timeline.

Thus we’re asking for protection from everything that can silently work against us.
