15. Even Happiness Keeps You Bound | Anandamaya Kosha | Vivekachudamani – Verse 57

Summary:

Vivekachudamani, Verse 57: The jīva's sole motivation is to be a bhoktā; when seeker and sought unite, the seeker temporarily contacts the ānandamaya, manifesting ānanda. Its three gradations – priya, moda, pramoda – are time-bound vṛttis subject to destruction, dependent on the object retaining desirability. Since joy has gradations, it cannot be the ānanda of Ātman. When puṇya ripens, the āhaṃkāra-I effortlessly becomes the priya-moda-pramoda vṛtti. The ānandamaya becomes a kośa when limited joy is mistaken for the true Self.

Vivekachudamani – Verse 57: Composition & Features of Anandamaya Kosha

ānanda pratibimba cumbita tanuḥ vṛttiḥ tama-ujṛmbhitā
syāt ānandamayaḥ priya ādi guṇakaḥ sva iṣṭa artha lābha udayaḥ
puṇyasya anubhave vibhāti kṛtīnām ānanda rūpaḥ svayaṁ
sarvaḥ nandati yatra sādhu tanubhṛt mātraḥ prayatnaṁ vinā (207, Alt 209)

The ānandamaya kośa is a modification born of tamas.  Priya, Moda and Pramoda are its triple qualities [three degrees of experiential happiness] that arise on gaining of a desired object. For those who have done good deeds, it shines at the time of experiencing the puya. At that time everyone who has a body, rejoices well without effort, becoming that very [limited] ānanda itself.

Chinmaya: A reflection of the Bliss of the Self  is modification that has risen from Tamas or Ignorance. This (modification) is the Anandamaya Kosha. Priya, Moda and Pramoda are its triple qualities that arise on some gaining of a desired object. When the fruits of good actions manifest as the experiences of such fortunate ones, the (three) forms of this happiness come spontaneously. In this state, everyone feels happy and pleased. This happens to all embodied beings, and it happens without the least effort by them!

Introduction

The sole motivation of jiva’s (vijnanamaya’s) / karta’s accomplishments, relationships, activities, travels – is to be a bhokta (enjoyer). Without this kosha, there would be no reason to do anything or live.

What is the Source of Happiness Felt When Jiva Contacts an Object of Desire?

If source of happiness was the jiva/seeker/subject/ahamkara/vijnanamaya, then wouldn’t need the object.

If source of happiness was in object, then the seeker would keep that object all the time.

Answer: When seeker & sought come together, it temporarily puts the seeker in touch with the anandamaya, which manifests as ananda (happiness).

Because ananda is so pleasing to the seeker, he now uses his vijnanamaya to get it again. When anandamaya becomes the goal (such as in samadhi / vipassana / ayahuasca / etc), then it’s a kosha.

What you actually want is freedom from the seeker whose seeking constant hits of anandamaya:

What you’re really looking for is FREEDOM from the seeker who’s constantly obsessed with contacting the anandamaya.

When will you be free from the seeker? When recognize your limitlessness, your freedom from even the anandamaya. Anandamaya is for the seeker, not for Self.

Three ways to interpret “Ānandamaya is a modification born of tamas, or avidya”:

  1. The joy that is generated by the anandamaya is not pure, it’s contaminated by the 3 gunas.
  2. During deep sleep, you have total ignorance (tamas) of prior 4 koshas, thus out of that ignorance, the anandamaya is born.
  3. Like all koshas, they are born of taking yourself to be good as them since beginningless time. This is due to tamas/avidya.

“Priya, Moda and Pramoda are its triple qualities”

This means there are three degrees of experiential happiness that arise on gaining of a desired object.

Since its joy has gradations and intensity (ie: vrtti modifications) and is time-bound, it can’t be the ananda of Self (Atman).

The three gradations are priya (vrtti arises at sight of object), moda (vrtti arises at near-gain of the object), pramoda (vrtti arises during experience with the object). Basically happy, happier, happiest.

Since they are born, they are subject to destruction.

Furthermore, the anandamaya is dependent on the object’s ability to retain it’s desirability.

“It shines at the time of experiencing the puya”

Basically, anadamaya's joy is result of meritorious deeds.

When punya comes into your life (due to dharmic act in past/present life), by help of conducive environment – it activates anandamaya. Then, you “enjoy without effort as the ahamkara-I becomes the priya-mode-pramoda vrtti”.

Uniqueness of Vivekachudamani: It says, what determines vijnanamaya (what’s effortless or difficult for you), and anandamaya (intensity of your ananda) – is punya-papa.

Anandamaya becomes a kosha (cover) when…

It becomes a cover when limited joy is mistaken for the true Self (“I am happy”, “Happiness is the goal of life”). It further becomes samsara-binding when link the happiness to the object.
