Advaita Vedanta COURSE: Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads & Non-Duality

An event every week that begins at 6:30pm on Tuesday, repeating until November 26, 2019
Advaita Vedanta says, truth of you is whole, complete, full, eternal, unchanging and limitless (satcitananda). Vedanta says, you are free right now.
However our experience is anything but fullness. In fact, everything about one’s life contradicts this lofty description. And you’d be right. Because fullness that’s unchanging and limitless — can not and never will apply to the limited, decaying and mortal Body-Mind instrument. Whom one falsely takes to be “I”.
This ignorant “I” (jīva: one who mistakes self for Body-Mind) in truth is satcitānanda (full self-aware existence). But jīva is unable to see how this is already a fact. So in hopes to realize this truth, one takes refuge in various spiritual paths which help to purify and prepare the mind.
Although one needs to eventually grow out of the habit to constantly purify the mind by various sādhanas (spiritual practices). Else aspirant never actually pursues Self-Knowledge (revealing the non-dual nature of Reality), which is the final means to Liberation (mokṣa).
Meaning he or she stays at level of Dharma (purity/nobility). Holy-emotions and deep-intellect doesn’t mean Liberation. Just like warming up is not equal to actually diving into the swimming pool. Disliking the initial cold is no excuse to continue warming up.
So once the student is willing to dive into pursuit of Self-Knowledge, Advaita Vedanta shows up together with a competent ācāryaḥ.
Ācārya is a qualified teacher well versed in śāstra (scriptures), firmly established in Supreme Truth and able to systematically lead one to the Supreme Reality. *Guru word is used sparsely because it’s original meaning has been diluted by negligent overuse.
Thus Advaita Vedanta is a means of knowledge (pramāṇa) used remove one’s false notions, “I experience myself as a limited, mortal, incomplete, small entity”. Vedanta is not a technique.
Why techniques can’t produce Liberation (only prepare the mind)…
One typically applies a special technique in the present, to get “there” in the future. Sound familiar? (Vipassanā, meditation, mantra’s, rituals, channeling, healing modalities, various types of Yoga’s, etc.)
The predicament with any technique practiced or ritual performed is the “I” by which one’s entire life is recognized (EG: I meditate, I learn, I experience, I doubt, I do) — still does NOT know who or what it is.
Hence no matter what is done or experienced, persons actions are resting on an unresolved foundation of this “I”. Even to disagree or agree with this statement, one says “I __”.
What’s more, a limited person performing a limited action (technique), while expecting an unlimited result, is a mathematical impossibility. Limitation can’t bring about limitlessness. Drop in the ocean can’t do some technique to magically “become” the entire Ocean. Common sense.
This is easily proven in one’s own behavior in form of non-stop DOING in form of improving and becoming. (materialistically/spiritually).
Look around you. Humans beings are either “busy” doing something new or repeating the same life from yesterday in a slightly different way (work > home > recreation > eat > sleep).
What motivates one to constantly improve and become? (I want __)
Answer is – sense of limitation caused by falsely associating oneself to Body-Mind. And to experience freedom from this limitation, one desires to improve or modify the Body-Mind complex. But also finds temporary refugee in various roles. Like an important social figure, boy/girlfriend, accumulation, friends. In other words…
Just like one desires to scratch the mosquito bite for a temporary relief… in the same way one pursues an active life in hopes to be relieved from the itch of limitation (ignorance). When the scratching stops, one discovers the itch is even more agitating, desiring to scratch further. This is how saṃsāra grabs us.
Just the mere act of improving/becoming reveals one is not happy with their current state. For example, to seek Truth is to imply “I don’t know the Truth, I’m not happy with myself”.
Therefore because of ignorance of one’s Real nature, life becomes an enslavement to: I want __, I don’t want __. (rāga/dveṣa)
And what is “I want __”, other then living in the future and neglecting the present.
For example, every-time one gets “there” through some spiritual experience/knowledge… one believes it’s the final “there”. And from NOW on it’ll be the permanent new “HERE”. But eventually the intensity subsides. Why? Because what begins in time, ends in time.
Thus seeker continues looking for another new “there” today. Endlessly chasing permanent fulfillment. This is called saṁsāra.
The solution is Advaita Vedanta…
A billionaire works all his life and enjoys superficial importance, only to die, money be returned to the country, and name be forgotten within a decade. An attractive lady enjoys attention owning to beauty-power of physical body, only to be barely recognized within 10 years. Where is the Roman Empire now, considering they were an unstoppable force?
Saṃsāra is a zero-sum game. One neither wins, nor loses here. A new intimate relationship is level 10 exciting. But it’s breakup is equally level 10 sorrowful.
Vedanta works permanently because it helps one discover self as non-separate from the unchanging, non-negatable, permanent Supreme Truth of the entire universe. Hence no extra object or experience in the world can add onto liberated person’s wholeness… because wholeness is the TOTAL happiness in past, present and future.
So the teachers duty in traditional Vedanta is to guide the aspirant to recognize “I am whole, complete, limitless”, by aligning his/her vision (understanding) to WHAT-IS.
For example, a common man sees world of plurality/duality (what is NOT; owning to power of māyā). But in truth, there is only ONE non-dual limitless Consciousness (Brahman). Meaning, to live the truth is to see “what-is”.
Thus teachings revealed in Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Brahma Sutras, and other… expounded by the teacher… brings the student to this same vision of oneness… and ending the cycle of birth/death.
Purpose of weekly classes in Melbourne…
Class teaching’s only purpose is to remove student’s false sense of limitation about self.
Limitation means, “I am small, separate, imperfect, incomplete and mortal”. This conclusion is what causes one to endlessly seek for permanent happiness through endless desires, both in material and spiritual world.
In truth, self is already whole, full, immortal, complete, limitless and unchanging. We’re not talking about feeling limitless or liberated, because feeling depends on limited and changing body-mind. Thus Liberation has nothing to do with some extraordinary/mystical state of mind as erroneously believed.
The teachings are expounded through a logical and systematic approach (A > B > C) to reveal the highest non-dual knowledge (bramavidyā) from Upaniṣads (selected verses) and Bhagavad Gītā (verse by verse).
The result is shifting of “I” from the mortal, changing, limited Body-Mind… to the unchanging, limitless Existence/Awareness (sat-cit-ananda).
Who actually qualifies for Liberation?
Process of listening and self-inquiring on the teachings gradually reveals oneself as the unchanging, ever-present Self (Ātman). However success requires qualifications.
Vedanta only works if individual has sufficiently matured. Just like voting has an age limit because a young person is unable to fully comprehend the social, economic system.
In our case, matured means you are no longer tempted, nor over ambitious, nor fooled by endless opportunities of building, improving and increasing the quality-quantity of first 3 stages of life:
(1) Dharma: wisdom/morals/responsibilities (2) Artha: wealth/security (3) Kāma: enjoyment/pleasure/luxury.
Meaning, 3 stages of life are decently in balance.
- You are not running away from anything that needs to be resolved (eg: unforgiven parents, money issues, etc).
- You have come to recognize the impermanence of worldly objects (Material and Spiritual).
- You are obsessed with the last stage of life: mokṣa (Freedom, Liberation).
- A burning desire for freedom is present.
The most mature courageously acknowledge, ‘I can’t figure this out on my own!’ Only then God (Īśvara) can send you the teacher. Until then, ego keeps holding onto it’s illusionary self. It’s entirely up to you when to let go. It can be now, or ten-thousands more lifetimes of saṃsāra.
Enlightenmentis an inappropriate word, as there’s no such word in Sanskrit nor the Vedas (source of Advaita Vedānta), and contains mixed connotations. What’s more, it was popularized in 19th century by German scholar of Indian studies, Max Müller. Thus we use this word to a minimum.

Qualifications to Attend?
When you are motivated by a burning, unstoppable, uncontrollable desire for Liberation (moksha; cessation of suffering, freedom, permanent satisfaction).
Attendee comes with humility. Intellectual pride and your vast Spiritual experience is put away. HONESTY is all that’s asked. 🙂
When repetitively exposed to this Self-Knowledge, the spiritual search/seeking ends permanently. Because the Absolute Truth is directly recognized as Self (your true Identity), not-separate from Existence.
Class teachings comprises of Bhagavad Gita (all verses, all 18 chapters) and selected Upanishad verses.
Already familiar with Vedanta (non-duality)?
To familiarize yourself with terminology and form rapport with teacher, please watch at least 2 recordings from 23+ and another after session 30.

New to Vedanta?
If never been exposed to Vedanta methodology, must watch recordings 1-7 and 23, 36 (because style/depth changes in later sessions and teachings gets more advanced). This is compulsory and may NOT attend class without this requirement. Why? Because videos will help develop suffice familiarity and rapport/trust to teacher who expects a primed, ready and willing student.
- Jīva (body-mind-intellect): We can’t skip the person who you take yourself to be – as is often seen in Neo-Advaita. Because an uncultivated and undeveloped psychology, prevents understanding of Self-Knowledge. For example, would you teach a 9 year old Quantum-physics, or wait until his/her mind-intellect has sufficiently matured for some, to successfully receive the teachings? Hence we first address Jīva hindrances by means of Karma-Yoga. How to live amidst a busy world, yet simultaneously exponentially grow as fully matured human being. Meaning we never again waste time, energy and effort. And our actions result in purification of the mind, enhancement of the intellect and diminishment of desires. Sounds too good to be true? Bhagavad Gita has been teaching this for 5000+ years, and it’s more applicable today, then ever before. It’s well known in India, yet Westerners are oblivious to this way of life.
- Īśvara (World/God/Creator): What is Īśvara? How does it create the Universe? If nothing is two (Advaita), then why do I see differences? Why can I not find lasting fulfillment? Why was I born? What happens at time of death? Do we really have free-will? How does Māyā conceals our Original Identity? Knowledge of Īśvara is crucial because there is only Īśvara (God). How can a sincere inquirer ‘Know Thyself’ when the inquirer also depends on Īśvara.
- Brahman (Original “I”, Consciousness): What is Consciousness? How do we grasp the ungraspable, comprehend the incomprehensible? What’s more, anyone can say “I am Liberated, Free Immortal, Limitless“. But to DIRECTLY understand and appreciate the depth of the absolute Truth… requires a careful precise teaching. Followed by sādhana (Spiritual practice or means) and consistent self-inquiry – the fruit of Self-Knowledge is gradually actualized (when “I” permanently shift away from Body-Mind – to Consciousness).
